Slipstream Brewery Brisbane bring high quality Bose audio to its new $1.5m brew pub.

17 January 2022

The craft beer industry in Australia has really taken off, growing at better than 20 percent each year. Sensing the coming trend, beer aficionados Deale and Elisa Stanley-Hunt toured the already thriving American beer scene repeatedly, visiting leading brewers to learn from the best and discovering the top tastes. Back home in Brisbane they put everything they had learned into founding the Slipstream Brewing Company – so named as they were: “…caught up in the slipstream of the greats!” From its inception in 2017, the business has thrived year on year and has just completed a $1.5m expansion, adding a kitchen, dining area and family-friendly outdoor function space to the brewery and cellar door.

The brewery is situated in the middle of a noisy industrial area, close to main roads and directly opposite to the Yeerongpilly train station. “Good background music makes a difference, otherwise, in this area, we’re listening to trains going past, industrial sounds, cars, trucks,” explained Deale Stanley-Hunt, Director of Slipstream Brewing. “So sound is very important to us – to get the right speaker system, to get the quality and create an atmosphere that’s going to keep people here and keep them coming back.”

Queensland-based integrator Ampd Electronics was engaged to meet the challenge of creating an immersive audio environment within the difficult acoustic of the high-ceilinged industrial building and the adjacent outdoor space. “We partnered with Bose to design a specific audio package for the venue,” recalled Ampd representative Andrew Laird. Key design objectives were to keep the speakers out of view and to provide easy zone control along with the flexibility to expand in the future with inputs for DJ or live music performers.

The final design saw 13 Bose DesignMax DM6SE speakers unobtrusively mounted on roof trusses and high on the outdoor wall and fences. Their consistent pattern control provided unobtrusive but even coverage across the bar, lounge and dining areas, while a single DM10-Sub energised the bottom end in the indoor areas. A trio of DesignMax DM2C-LP in-ceiling loudspeakers extends the same sound quality throughout the various ancillary areas in the venue.

Multiple analogue inputs are provided for music streamers at the main rack location where a ControlSpace ESP-880AD Engineered Sound Processor takes care of distribution, level control and EQ across the four zones. Two ControlSpace WP22BU-D Dante Wall Plates are installed in strategic locations to allow for live performers or DJs to plug into the system for functions and special events.

Primary control of the zones is provided by the Bose ControlSpace Remote app running on an iPad, which has proved very popular with the operators, while a ControlSpace CC-64 Control Center gives local control in the venue manager’s office.

“The staff feel that the system is very easy to use,” Deale observes. “They can walk around with the iPad and control the entire system remotely. They don’t need to go to a panel with a whole array of buttons, so it’s easy to maintain the levels where we want them to be.”

Completing the all-Bose system are PowerSpace P21000A and P4300A amplifiers. “The advantage of using Bose as an end-to-end solution is close integration from the ControlSpace DSP to the amps,” Laird comments. “It gives us maximum control with a user-friendly interface and virtually limitless expandability via both analogue and Dante.”

Slipstream founder Deale is quick to applaud the benefits of the fully integrated system. “Bose came highly recommended in the industry as being one of the highest quality commercial audio systems available. And we got great service from both Ampd and Bose throughout the installation. We can add additional components as we gain experience and as we grow the venue”.

“It’s delivering on just what we wanted,” he concluded. “We wanted to have a background music system that changes the atmosphere and changes the vibe in the venue, and takes people away from that industrial setting that they go through to get to Slipstream Brewing.”
